Name of Best Practice: Welcoming New Students

Rationale/Purpose of Event: The purpose of the practice is to welcome new students to our Physical Education Class by having them share their favorite game or activity from their former school. It also serves as a way for you to get to know the student and learn some new games to use during class.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5, 6-8

Materials Needed: Handout

Welcoming New Students

I have a handout that I give students who are new to our school. It helps me to introduce myself to the student and welcomes them to our school. The handout asks them to share their favorite game or activity with me from their former school by writing down the name of the game and description how to play it. This allows them to share a fun activity with their new friends as well as remember the good times they had playing the activity with their old friends. Hopefully this adds up to a smooth transition. I make sure the game is appropriate and promotes quality Physical Education.

Here is an example of the handout:

Welcome to Kennard Elementary School - Home of the Tigers

Hello! My name is Mr. Wilhelm and I am your new Physical Education Teacher. You will have Physical Education Class on A-day and will need to remember to wear tennis shoes and clothes that your parents will not get mad if they get a little dirty. Although I have many fun activities that we will do during class, I am always looking for new and exciting games to play. I like to ask all the new students who come to Kennard to tell me what their favorite game or activity was at their old school and write it down for me. This way I get to share your favorite game with your new friends and you get to play your favorite game and remember all the good times you had playing it with your old friends.
