Name of Best Practice: Alphabet Fitness Challenge

Rationale/Purpose of Event: The Alphabet Fitness Challenge is designed for students to do at home, in PE as a warm-up and for classroom teachers to do in class as a brain break or morning activity. It's intended to improve fitness and familiarize students with common motivational and health and wellness terms.

Suggested Grade Level: 1-8

Word of the Day (W.O.D.) Word Document Sheets

Alphabet Fitness Challenge

Each day of the Alphabet Fitness Challenge Calendar has a word of the day (see docs above in Materials section). Students read and discuss the Word of the Day with their parents, teachers or classmates and how it relates to health and wellness. Then students must use the Alphabet Fitness Key to decipher the exercise which corresponds to each of the letter in the Word of the Day. Performing each exercise in the word of the day is the workout of the day.

I use this Best Practice as a "take home challenge." Students are rewarded depending on the number of days they complete the challenge (see Alphabet Fitness Calendar for gold, silver, and bronze medal certificate breakdown).

Classroom teachers also use this challenge in their morning meeting. Other PE teachers are using for their warm-up during class.

Each month, the words of the day can be deleted and new ones added. The word of the day can have a different theme each month.
