Name of Best Practice: Open Gym at Open House
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To get my students in my gym with their families and allow them to meet me. In addition, this gave me a great opportunity to share information with them, and allowed parents to view my rules and see a few different activities that their child will be doing. This also builds excitement for PE!
Suggested Grade Level: K-2, 3-5
Materials Needed: Various equipment, healthy snacks, any materials that you want to deliver to the students and their families.
Open Gym at Open House
During the school year I host an Open Gym Night once a month for all of my students and their families. In addition to being active, they also can share a healthy snack! I decided that it would be a good idea to have an open gym during our open house this year. This turned out to be a great event. After the students visited their classrooms, the teachers sent them to me. Most of the families stayed about 10-15 minutes. I also had MyPlate information, a snack, and my first newsletter of the year available. This was a wonderful expoerence. I love that I was able to get my students and their families into the gym, and that I had a chance to meet everyone! Pictures
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Keep it short! Most of my parents were in a hurry, but also wanted their children to come visit. Have information ready for them to pick up! Do your best to greet everyone!
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:
Appropriate equipment (lighter bowling balls, ramp for bowling ball).
