Name of Best Practice: Wellness Day

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To educate students about a number of important health topics while involving the entire school and community.

Suggested Grade Level: 1-6

Materials Needed: Depending on the topics covered for the year, we utilize about 10-20 community members as presenters and supply whatever they need to cover the topic.

Wellness Day

Wellness Day started because of teacher's not liking the students being pulled out of class for all of the health screenings, etc. that take place during the year. I decided to have a day that not only would take care of the pull out, but also give our students the opportunity to work with community members on a variety of current wellness topics.

We go for a half day and rotate every 30 minutes to a different station. The pull out programs covered are the basic nurse health screening, dental screening, puberty for upper grades and the good touch/bad touch lesson for lower grades.

Last year I added:

  • nutrition

  • aerobics

  • back health

  • drug education

  • quiet time activities

  • latch key kids safety

  • good TV viewing

  • bike helmets, and more.

The teachers rotate with their class and enjoy a day that is planned for them. I start at the first of the school year to line up my presenters for the Wellness Day. It is held in January. The students evaluate the day and I learn which stations to consider for the following year and which ones to not use again. I have had very positive responses from our students, staff, parents, and presenters. It has become a yearly event for us.
