Name of Best Practice: Family Night at the Track
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage family exercise and to introduce the students and families to the PE program.
Suggested Grade Level: K-2
Materials Needed: Some kind of incentive for coming to the event. I used money from our PTO to purchase $2.00 playground balls. Each student who came received a ball.
Family Night at the Track
Organize a night of exercise at the high school track. Invite the students and their families to attend an evening of exercise (walking) and information at the beginning of the school year. We reserved the high school all weather track for an evening. As the students arrived they received a popsicle stick and we encouraged to walk with their families for a half an hour. Each lap they took they received a mark on their stick to keep track of number of laps. Encourage families to take this time to talk to their child and about the importance of exercise. You can display signs around the track with exercise facts and encouragement. At the end of the half hour hand out the playground balls and explain a little about the coming year and units/exercise in PE. Challenge the families to exercise together or encourage each other to exercise daily. We had a good turn out and the students who attended really enjoyed themselves.
Variations:
Invite various organizations (YMCA, gymnastics, karate, Parks and Rec.) to join you for the evening and hand out information to encourage exercise and healthy living.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Ask for some volunteers to help with the marking of the popsicle sticks and handing out the balls/incentives. Have an alternate plan in case of bad weather.
