Name of Best Practice: Teamwork T-shirts

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To introduce and reinforce the concepts of sportsmanship and teamwork

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: T-shirts, (or Paper T-shirt cut-outs as they are easier to hang), Markers, Masking Tape

Teamwork T-shirts

I typically do this at the beginning of the school year but it can be revisited anytime during the year. This can be done in the gym or in a classroom teachers room.

To begin, each class gets a T-shirt and their classroom teacher's name is written at the neck of the shirt. Have a discussion with your classes about working together as a class for this project. Then introduce the concept of what teamwork and sportsmanship are. Provide examples from the sports world if you wish. We then share thoughts and ideas about what good teammates say and do for one another in all kinds of situations.

As students give ideas of what teammates say to one another, either myself or student recorders begin to write down the sayings on the shirts. All shirts are hung on a wall for all to see during class. Students are reminded that when in class, they should use the phrases on the teamwork t-shirts.
