Name of Best Practice: PE Student of the Month/Year

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To recognize outstanding students in physical education class. A secondary purpose is to motivate students to do their best in PE class.

Suggested Grade Level: 7-8

Materials Needed: Certificate Maker software program, bumper sticker award, word processor for the parent letter, perpetual 8th grade PE student of the year plaque.

PE Student of the Month/Year

Each month a PE student is selected from each class, provided that a student has met the criteria for PE Student of the Month (i.e., Perfect attendance, dressed out daily and properly, all assignments turned in on time, positive behavior and attitude). Students meeting these criteria are given an award certificate, a bumper sticker, and I write a letter home to their parents. The parents receive a bumper sticker stating their child was the PE student of the month. The PE Student of the Month list is published in the local newspaper.

During 8th grade graduation I present one 8th grade boy and girl with a plaque and a $50.00 gift certificate to a local sporting goods store. I add their names to the perpetual plaque at school as well.
