Suggested Grade Level: 6-12

Materials Needed: Physical activity log

PE Activity Log

Students are given a pre-designed pre-designed activity log in which they chart physical activities they are doing at home or within the community. Some days, the activities are predetermined by the teacher to work on certain aspect of fitness. Other days, students are given a list of activity choices to pick from. Credit is given to students who participate on sport teams. Students are also encouraged to try new activities. Credit can also be received for doing household chores such as raking leaves, cutting grass (push mower of course), etc. (The parents love this choice). A due date (set by our department of 5 teachers for the same dates so all students turn in the logs at the same time) is placed on the log and the log is stored in a Physical Education notebook. Students record the activity number on their log when it is their choice day. We complete two logs each marking period with each log lasting 4 weeks. Parents sign the log on a weekly basis. Logs are collected on the due date and assignments are counted as part of a homework grade for physical education. A sample log is sent home at the beginning of the year with an attached note explaining the assignments. Teachers also brief parents about the log at our annual back-to-school night. New logs are distributed throughout the year.
