Name of Best Practice: Off to College
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote a fun incentive based jogging program for each of my PE classes during the winter months. In addition, this integrates the learning of geography with physical fitness.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: Paper, markers, or anything else needed to keep track of the jogged miles
Off to College
For this activity students jog to where their classroom teacher went to college using a scale that best fits their situation. Classes log miles on a chart until they reach their destination. Phase III: Explain to your classes that you are going to jog to where their classroom teacher went to college. Make a chart or map, in miles, that shows your school (starting point) and the distance that they will need to jog in order to get to the college (ending spot).
Phase I: Ask your PE classes classroom teachers where they went to college. Write or call their college and ask for posters or pictures to put up in your gym or hallway.
Phase II: Measure your PE area that you use for jogging. Ex: OUr space is 250 feet x 25 students = 6250 feet, (5280 feet = 1 mile). Therefore if my class of 25 students jogs one lap as a class, they have jogged a little more than one mile.
