Name of Best Practice: Be Strong / Live Strong Stationary Bike Program

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To reward students who have made good character decisions in the classroom with extra time to develop a strong body by exercising on one of the stationary bikes.

Suggested Grade Level: 4-12

Materials Needed: Stationary bikes (1 recumbent), Staff information sheet describing the program.

Be Strong / Live Strong Stationary Bike Program

During the school day observe positive student behavior and reward the students for their efforts (10 minutes on a stationary bike). A student that is caught doing something good will receive a positive beavior slip and write a short description of what positive behavior was performed. He/she will then go to the gym at the scheduled time with the description of what the positive behavior was to show they have earned their 10 minutes on one of the stationary bikes. Due to supervision needs, the schedule will vary if the Physical Education classes are inside or outside. Inside days students bike during some of my classes. Outside days they bike during my prep or lunch. Each grade level is assigned a time. Students need to be on time. Please send only one student at a time. The written descriptions of what the child wrote are taped to the wall.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

Meet with staff to explain "The Be Strong, Live Strong Program." Remind them that if they catch a kid being good that need to send the student to you at the appropriate time. Give them a copy of the Be Strong, Live Strong Schedule.

All of our bikes were donated. Try parents, K Mart, health clubs, etc.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

We use recumbent bikes as a choice. I would let a student who is wheelchair bound play spider hockey with a friend or some other choice activity.
