PAWS CLUB
P.A.W.S - Physical Activity With Students, is a P.E. Club that I sponsor. The name P.A.W.S. was devised because our school name is the Panthers. Most of the activities take place afterschool but with principal's permission some are during school hours when it is appropriate. The P.A.W.S. CLUB is not only a "PE CLUB" but also a service learning opportunity. Students are required to earn 300 points a semester to attend the big fitness related field trip. These have included during the past 3 years of P.A.W. a National Hockey League Game and a Snow skiing trip. Points are earned by community service projects, grades, fitness activities provided by P.A.W.S. and sports participation. All of the above mentioned are worth 50 points. It does not take long to accumulate 50 points. I monitor each members points by logging their results into a computer and filing their signed verification forms. Verification forms are forms that are to be signed by the businesses, instructors, coaches and teachers that each activity applies which the student participated in. I ask for community volunteers for afterschool activities that have included: Karate, CPR Instructors, Dance, Gymnastics, Yoga, YMCA Fitness Trainers, Horseback riding, Army National Guard Climbing Wall, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Skating, Running and Bowling. All the instructors volunteer their time and the students love it. The activities last 1-2 1/2 hours afterschool. It gives the students who are not involved in sports an opportunity to get involved in a fitness activity with friends and earn points. The students who are involved in sports still receive their points for sport participation. Students pay a $5.00 fee at the beginning of the school year. This goes towards the cost of paying for the field trips. P.A.W.S. is a club that 6th graders can't wait to join and stay members of throughout the middle school years.
