Family Step Aerobic Night
At the beginning of our step aerobic unit I let the students know that they have a chance to be part of the Family Step Aerobic Night. I let them know about this and encourage them to work very hard so they can showcase their work in front of parents. Many of the groups routines are chosen to be performed for their family and friends at the Family Step Aerobic Night. The student groups that did not work very hard and/or don't finish a full routine do not participate. Last year we had over 150 parents come to the event. The students practice their routines for hours to prepare for the event and both boys and girls equally participate in the event.
During the first part of the unit I teach many of the common steps that students can use to form their own step aerobic routines. As a class we put the steps together to music to form a full class routine.
Then, after a couple of weeks, students break into groups of 4-5 and create their own routines. They pick their own music (which needs to be screened to make sure their is nothing objectionable), create their own steps, arrange their steps anyway they want to, pick customs, etc. Depending on the class size you may have to limit the number of steps or the time limit on the routines.
