One of the ways we learn about successful teaching is through
the dissemination of best practices--outstanding things teachers and
schools do to motivate youngsters, gain support for their programs, and
generally enhance the enjoyment and effectiveness of learning. Up to now
there has been no way for interested individuals to learn about the Best
Practices in K-12 Physical Education. PE Central (www.pecentral.org), the premier Web site for physical
educators, is filling that void with our Best Practices Program. Examples
of such practices might include: creative and unique curriculum units,
family fitness nights, open house programs, after school programs, field
trips and Internet projects. Best Practices on PE Central provides
interested educators and parents ways to discover innovative practices in
physical education and also provide recognition for those creative teachers
who develop the Best Practices.
Professionals who are interested in submitting a Best Practice idea may
do so by filling out an online submission form. An editorial board
will then review the submitted idea. If the board accepts the idea it will
be posted in the Best Practice Showcase Room. Once the idea is posted, it
has the possibility of being upgraded to a Blue Ribbon Best Practice.
Physical educators who attest to the effectiveness of a Best Practice
by voting for it. When a
Best Practice receives five votes, it is awarded Blue
Ribbon Status. In addition to being further recognized on the PE Central
site, the contributor receives a blue ribbon banner on the top of their practice. Best Practices made its debut on September 1, 1998 and is yet
another way PE Central hopes to enhance and recognize quality K-12 physical
education programs.
