Name of Activity:
Construction Destruction
Purpose of Activity:
The purpose of this activity is to reinforce the the floor hockey passing skill. This activity will also help to improve passing accuracy.Prerequisites:
Students should already have previous knowledge of stick handling and passing.Suggested Grade Level:
3-5Materials Needed:
Hockey Sticks (half the class) Yarn Balls (half the class) Cones Cups ( Enough for each group to have 6) ScoreboardDescription of Idea
Setup:
Divide the gym in half. On one side mark off three lanes at distances of about 10, 15, and 20 feet from the center line. Place hockey sticks and yarn balls on the 20 foot line. On the other side of the gym place cones about 15 feet from the center line. I use 5 cones and place 6 cups on each cone.
Activity:
Divide the class into two teams. There will be a "demolition" crew and a "construction" crew. The demolition crew has the hockey sticks and yarn balls. The construction crew should divide up evenly, based on the number of cones, and stand behind each cone. The construction crew will be trying to build pyramids with their 6 cups while the demolition crew is using their passing skill to knock the cups down.
On the go signal, the first student in each construction crew line, runs to the center line with 1 cup and places it on the line to start their pyramid. They run back and give a high five to the next student in line who does the same thing. The demolition crew picks a line to shoot from and tries to knock down any cups that have been placed on the line. If the construction crew completes a pyramid, they collect their cups, put 3 points on the scoreboard, and start over trying to build another pyramid. The demolition crew gets points based on which line they are shooting from. The point values I use are 2, 5, and 10. Ten points being from the furthest line. When cups get knocked over, the construction crew must bring those cups back to their cone.
Each round is 2-3 minutes depending on how much time we have. After each round, the students switch roles.
I use this game, mostly in hockey, to reinforce their passing and shooting skills. This game can also be used to reinforce soccer passing skills or even the overhand throw.
Variations:
Play the game without keeping score.
Assessment Ideas:
Checklist with passing cues
Teaching Suggestions:
Keep construction crew size to 2 or 3 to maximize participation. More than 3 will have children needlessly standing around.
Play the game without keeping score.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities
To adapt this activity, you can add a line that is closer to the pyramids, decrease the running distance for the construction crew, or even make the towers smaller with just 3 cups.
