PE Central

Week 31: April 6-10, 1998

IA Name: Stop, Drop, and Roll

Grade Level: 2-5

Equipment: Cones to mark off activity area

Directions:

Have students spread out in general space in a safe manner (arms distance apart). On teachers command, students walk in general space until they hear the teachers signal "STOP." The students immediately stop.

Have the students continue to walk in general space again after saying "GO". This time the teacher calls out "Drop and Roll." The students then practice falling (or crumbling) safely to the floor and then roll like a log 3 times on the floor until the teacher gives the signal to continue with a traveling movement (i.e., skipping, galloping, etc.). The teacher can ask the children to call out the words "stop", "drop", and "roll", immediately after the teacher says each word.

Teaching Tips:

  • Remind them of being careful of rolling into others on the floor.
  • Remind them not to Fall to the floor in a hard manner. It is more of a crumble.
