PE Central

Week 27: March 9-13, 1998

IA Name: Hoopla Shuffle

Grade Level: K-3

Equipment: One hoop for every child, cones to define the activity area.

Directions:

As students enter the gym have them find a hoop in the activity area to stand in. On the teachers signal, encourage students to show you how they can move the hoop around and through the general space using only their feet, making sure to change pathways in order not to bump into anyone else. Once you've observed their movements and whether they are moving safely and changing pathways, pinpoint students to demonstrate the following movements (and any others) for students to try:
  • Students shuffle the hoop by having both feet inside the hoop, remaining in contact with the floor.
  • Students use one foot inside the hoop with the other foot outside the hoop.
  • Students use both feet outside the hoop and shuffle kick it (like dribbling a soccer ball). These MUST be soft kicks however.
  • Students twirl the hoop around one ankle while "jumping" the other foot over it.

To make it more interesting tell them that when they hear you say "SWITCH" that means they are to find a new hoop to move with.
