Week 25: Feb. 23-27, 1998

IA Name: Hoop Jump

Grade Level: 1-5

Equipment: Enough hoops for all students in the class, cones to mark off the playing area, CD/Tape player, medium to fast paced piece of music

Directions:

Before students arrive scatter hoops throughout the playing area. When students arrive for class ask them to stand in a hoop upon entering the playing area. When the music starts there job is to move throughout the area using a locomotor travelling pattern of your choice (running is not a good choice for this activity). They are to avoid going into a hoop while they are moving. They start moving in and around the hoops and their classmates when the music starts.

When the music stops the students are to jump in and out of a hoop that is close to them. They need to be at a hoop by themselves. Encourage them to use the five patterns of jumping and landing:
  • Two-foot takeoff to a one-foot landing
  • Two-foot takeoff to a two-foot landing
  • One-foot takeoff to a landing on the same foot (hop)
  • One-foot takeoff to a landing on the other foot (leap)
  • One-foot takeoff to a two-foot landing

This sequence of music on while travelling (make sure to change the locomotor movement for them) and jumping in and out of the hoop while the music is stopped continues for as long as you want. This is a great activity to raise the heart rate so consider having them take their pulse prior to the activity and again at the end.

Safety Tips/Variations:

  • Best to have them travel using locomotor skills such as skipping, hopping, sliding, etc. while moving around the hoops
  • Do not allow them to move/jump/leap over the hoops during the traveling portion.
  • Remind them to keep their eyes up and open as they move amongst the hoops and their classmates.
  • Make the area smaller to make it more difficult to move.
  • Do not let students fight over a hoop when the music starts or you can let them jump in and out of a hoop with one other person.
