Week 1: August 18-22, 1997
IA Name: Stevens Speedway
Grade Level: 1-3
Equipment: Cones for the lanes, exercise sign boards
Directions:
Set the cones up to divide a slow moving lane from a fast moving lane around the playing area. The middle area will be the exercise area. Students are asked what rules their parents must obey while they are driving. They are to instructed to look over their shoulder befor changing lanes. The faster lane may only be used for running and/or skipping, the slower lane can be used for fast walking, hopping, sliding, grapevining, jumping, etc.
Students may pull off the highway (middle coned off area) to the middle exercise area. Signs with exercises are posted. They are to do the exercises of their choice. You will find that this activity allows students to move at their own pace and they are moving all the time.
Teaching Tips/Variations
It may be a good idea to have a portion of the middle area set aside as a rest section.
Make sure to include pictures of the exercises on the cards so those who don't/can't read well can make out what to do.
May want to have a "police station" for those who don't "drive" well in their lanes. This would be the timeout area for those after a warning is given. In other words, their "license" would be revoked.
