Week 17: Dec. 15-19, 1997

IA Name: Surfing Warm Up

Grade Level: K-5

Equipment: Cones to define playing area, CD/Tape Player, Music: The song Wipe Out

Directions:

Have the students find their a good personal space in the playing area. Tell them to get ready to listen to the music. Start the "Wipe Out" song.

When the drums are playing, the students immitate a drummer. Or you can have them swing their arms verticallly in front of them, swinging up above the head and down to the waist. Encourage them to stay to the beat and tempo of the drums.

When the music changes (drums stop), the students immitate a surfer, bending at the knees and moving up and down. (The students need to stay in their self space). "Bend low and get into the tube" is what I tell them. Stand up and put your 10 toes over the front of the board and lean backwards using the arms for balance and "Hang Ten"!

The music will change back to the drums and the activity repeats itself.
