Week 16: Dec. 8-12, 1997

IA Name: Ice Skating Without the Ice!

Grade Level: K-2

Equipment: Cones to define playing area, Lots of plastic supermarket grocery bags, a wooden or tile floor, CD/Tape Player, Music: "The Skater's Waltz" or another piece of slow wintery music.

Directions:

Everyone gets 2 shopping bags. Have the students place one foot in each bag. Students can hold the handles if they feel comfortable. Have them find a good self space in the playing area and then turn on the music. Their task is to glide around the gym floor to the tempo of the music. They should go slow and pretend they are skating. If a bag gets ripped, have students get another one.

Variations:

  • In addition to gliding, have them work on turning and have them move at different levels and pathways.
  • Have students pair up and move together with a partner.
  • Play follow the leader

    Safety Precautions:

  • Do not allow students to put bag over their head
  • Keep shoes on for this activity
  • Make sure they stay at a slow tempo
