PE Central

Week 15: Dec. 1-5, 1997

IA Name: Rip Off

Grade Level: 4-8

Equipment: Cones to define playing area, enough plastic hockey sticks or pillo polo sticks for each student, yarn balls or plastic pucks for each student

Previous Experience: Students should have had previous instruction in dribbling with hockey sticks and pucks prior to partaking in this activity. They should also be very familiar with the rules you have a established for this activity.

Directions:

As students enter the gym or playing area ask them to get a yarn ball and a hockey or pillo polo stick and then they are to find a good self space in the coned off playing area. Explain the safety tips of using hockey sticks (see below). Have two students give you their yarn ball (or puck).

On the teachers signal, everyone is to start to dribble their pucks throughout the designated playing area. The two without pucks are trying to take pucks from those who have them. When they do take them successfully then the student who had their puck "ripped off" tries to take a puck from others who are dribbling in the area. Continue this for 4-5 minutes.

Variations:

  • Take more pucks away from more students and the activity gets more difficult.
  • May want to designate a safety zone where dribblers can go for no more than 30 seconds and only 3-4 people are allowed in at a time. In there no one can take their puck.

    Safety Precautions:

  • All sticks must stay on the ground during this activity.
  • No body checks or rough-housing.
  • No hitting of ankles of feet
