PE Central

Week 14: Nov. 17-21, 1997

IA Name: Cone Kraze

Grade Level: 2-5

Equipment: 20 cones

Directions:

Have cones spread out throughout the playing area. Place half of them so they are right side up and the other half should be laying on their side. Divide the class in half so that there are two equal groups\teams.

On the teachers signal, the object is for one group to put the cones that are laying on their side right side up (i.e., standing); while the other group is trying to put the cones that are right side up on their side. The teacher may choose any locomotor pattern (i.e., walking, jumping, hopping) they want to start the activity. Initially, students are only allowed to knock the cones over or pick them up with their hands. Kicking over with their feet or other body parts is not allowed (see variation below).

While the students are playing the teacher states different locomotor movements for the students to use (i.e., walking, skipping, jogging, galloping, sliding, hopping, etc.)

Variation:

  • Limit the students ease of doing this activity by allowing them to only use their non-favorite hand or a different body part to knock down and and put up the cones. For the standing of the cone have the students work in pairs if you limit to a body part other than the hands (i.e., knees are used to knock over and pick up so that would mean two students may get together to put the cone back up).
