In a class of 21 children

Activity:
Green foods :
foods that we have the green light to eat A LOT of – fruit, vegetables, bread,
pasta. Low sugar cereals etc
Yellow Foods :
Foods that are important for us – but SOME of – milk, cheese, yoghurt, fish,
meat etc
Red Foods : these
types of food are also important for us, but A LITTLE OF- sweets, margerine,
high sugar cereals etc.
Organisation:
The
child at Position 5/6 (depending on the class), picks up the any food item. Upon
signal from class teacher, the children at the starting line, runs down to the
child at a position further up the line (sitting on the edge of the tyre with
feet out and is looking back to see approaching runner). Once the food is exchanged, the passer
sits in place of the child who was seated on the tire edge. When a child has
received food item, he/she must get up from the tyre, and run down and pass it
to the to the child further down the line …5 to 4, etc… repeat until child at 1,
puts the food in the TRAFFIC –LIGHT SYSTEM CRATE depending on the food type.
Encourage the children to help each other regarding into which crate any type of
food must go in. Once the front
leader has placed the food item in the Traffic lights crates, he needs to make a
“PEACE hand sign” to his/her team so that they all return to their starting
position. Back leader picks up the next food item and the children continue
passing until all 6 items have been transferred.
NB:
If there is no one at position 5 or in the case of any absentees in any
position, the runner-giver child has to touch the “FOOD” to the ground in the
tyre-centre just the same, and pick it up and pass is down the to the next
child. … etc.
When all the
houses have completed the Food Transfer the teacher, checks that all house have
passed down all the food items (placing is not important … but passing the food
in a nice way from person to person, and working together as a team is). The teacher then asks,
Did you help each other to
pass the food item ?
Did you enjoy working with
your friends ?
We need to check now how
many points the teams earned. One point is earned for each correct placement –
any mistakenly placed food items can be rearranged by the team and the team can
thus recuperate the point. The children will have “sticker” spots on the food
items so if they are not sure they can match the traffic crate to the colour
code eg. Green sticker = Green light food.
Directions:
Remind
children what they have to do, esp., if absent child remind that empty tire has
to be "touched"
Encourage
the children to have FUN and work on TEAM WORK!
v
Is
every body in place - check that
kids are sitting on edge of tire.
v
Are
you ready to pass the “FOOD ITEM” down the line
v
…
GO !
v
In the case of a class of 21.
There
will be three teams that have the child at position 6 having to touch the tire
at Position 5, and run the extra leg, down to position 4.
In the case of absentees: Empty
tire is sign that child attaparsi is there, and has to be touched by child
before her/him.
