Name of Activity / Task:
Where in the World
Concept being Taught:
Forming Groups
Purpose of Activity:
To utilize geography as a means of organizing students and to
include content knowledge in the physical education
setting which will benefit students through the
reinforcement of geographical concepts normally taught in the
classroom.
Suggested Grade Level:
3-5
Materials Needed:
Signs, if desired, to identify locations during
the introduction or as a means of providing the
instructional cues when this method is applied.
Description of the Activity /
Task:
In order to organize students, various
geographical locations or terms are used.
The equator would
signal all students to go to the center line or half
court. This is best if the field or gymnasium runs North and South.
The signs for this could include the word "equator", a
picture of the globe with the equator highlighted, a country
which the equator runs through or 0 degrees latitude.
The Tropic of
Cancer could be the North free throw line. The manner
which I find effective for getting students to remember
that the Tropic of Cancer is North of the Equator is
that the equator is the belt. The cancer we most often
think of is lung cancer. This is above the belt. On a
map, North is above the belt and the tropic of cancer
is above the belt.
For the polar regions, in
addition to Arctic and Antarctic signaling the students to
divide north and south, we also use penguins (south) and
polar bears (north) or puffins and penguins. Any type of
geographical specific knowledge can be applied. This can
include native peoples, etc.
The tropical region is the
center of the playing area. This is also effective for
signifying the playing areas for soccer and other games that
different players have a specific playing area.
We also use
the names of countries as a signal to move to the area
of the floor where different countries would be
located were the activity area a map.
A picture of the
states Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico is a sign
for the students to go to the four corners of the
activity area. This is also fun if you can get pictures of
students posing in the Four Corners Region where they are
"sprawled" out across four states at the same time.
This is
a great method to use recognition of cultures,
landmarks, wildlife, etc. to keep students thinking and move
them effectively to space for various activities.
For
stations, directions can be given for activities which take
place where a specific country would be located on the
map. For instance, Australia is located on the lower
right hand of most maps. Australia could be the location
for aerobic activity.
Making index cards with
different styles of dress, wildlife, etc. is a quick way to
divide students into teams. It is always good to post a
key somewhere visible for the learning stages leading
to mastery.
