Name of Activity: Healthy Choice Shopping Frenzy

Purpose of Activity: To categorize foods into the USDA MyPyramid food groups.

Prerequisites: 1. Introduction to the USDA MyPyramid food groups. 2. Knowledge of scooter safety.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: one each of orange, green, red, blue, and purple construction paper, labeled: Orange—Grains, Green—Vegetables, Red—Fruits, Blue—Milk, Purple—Meat and Beans; variety of plastic foods; 10 bowling pins; 20 scooters; 5 mats

Description of Idea

Divide students into groups of four. Scatter containers, plastic food, and bowling pins throughout the activity area. Identify each container as one of the MyPyramid food groups. Ask each group to create a shopping cart by placing a mat on four scooters. Designate two students as shoppers (sit on cart) and two as cart pushers. Shoppers grab a food. The group categorizes which of the MyPyramid food groups the food belongs and the cart pushers push their cart to the labeled container that matches their choice. Shoppers drop the food item in the container. The activity continues until all foods are in a container. Repeat activity challenging the groups to categorize foods 100% correctly.

Assessment Ideas:

Foods placed in wrong containers are discussed and categorized in the correct MyPyramid food group.

I don't see the significance of the bowling pins either. I'd love to try this but I want to know how the pins are used first!

Maybe I missed something, what is the purpose of the bowling pins?
