Name of Activity: Let's warm up our bodies! (Adapted Activity)

Suggested Grade Level: all

Materials Needed: Meyer Johnson (Meyer-Johnson.com) symbols representing different body parts. These can be made with the software, Boardmaker. Make the symbols 4"x 4" and laminate them for increased durability. Velcro can be used on the backs so that the symbols can be affixed to a communication board or poster sized piece of felt, affixed to a wall or to some visible surface. This allows each student to see the body part that will be focused on and reinforces using the symbols. Tote bag or bowl to hold Meyer-Johnson symbols.

Description of Idea

Tell the students that the group is going to work on warming up different parts of the body. Students will pick one body part to warm up together.

In turn, each child chooses a card showing a body part. To warm up the part, use a variety of tactile movements: stroking, stretching, wiggling, patting, pinching, tapping, tickling, gently scratching, moving by self, hand over hand with a paraprofessional or the teacher tapping or moving with one of the students. Try to have the students be as active as possible in this activity. The variety of tactile movements helps reinforces the concept of a body part.

It's possible for the teacher to lead this activity without symbols, but the choice on the part of the student allows for increased interaction, especially with verbally impaired individuals.

At the teacher's discretion and the age of the students, a finishing activity could be singing "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes."

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

-For visually impaired students, Braille could be used.

-If a student has difficulty making a choice physically, ask the student to choose one, given choice between two pictures by looking or pointing to their choice.

-For students who lack the ability to make choices the teacher can choose for the student.
