Name of Activity: Jungle Stretching

Purpose of Activity: To teach students a fun way to stretch and easy ways to remember it by associating it with an animal.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: None, unless the teacher wants to add props to make a student feel more like an animal.

Description of Idea

Have students find their own self space. (You may provide them with a carpet square or small mat). Tell the students that they are going to pretend they are going into the jungle. In order to make it through the jungle they must turn into animals! And when they turn into these animals they have to stretch their bodies!

Note: Don't feel the need to do all of these in this instant activity. You can do just a couple if you wish.

1. Cobra

a. Cues:
• Lay on belly
• Raise upper body
b. Safety:
• Do not lean back too far.

2. Hungry Alligators

a. Cues:
• Open mouths wide
• Clap hands
b. Safety:
• Good personal space
c. Challenges:
• Make your alligator mouth open as wide as it can
• See how fast you can open and close your alligator mouth
• Make your alligator mouth move side to side
• Switch hands, if right was on top, put the left on top

3. Monkey Arms

a. Cues:
• Reach for bananas
• Pull them down
b. Safety:
• Personal space
c. Challenges:
• See how fast you can grab the bananas.

4. Parrot Wings (flutter, coast)

a. Cues:
• Quick wrists (flutter)
• Wide Arms (coast)
• Arms up and down (coast)
• Twist body (coast)
b. Safety:
• Good personal space
c. Challenges:
• See how quickly you can flutter
• See how wide your wings can go

5. Hunting Lion

a. Cues:
• Push-up position
• Toe to wrist
• Keep body low
b. Safety:
• Good personal space
c. Challenges:
• See if your toe can reach past your wrist

6. Inchworm

a. Cues:
• Walk out hands
• Walk in feet
b. Safety:
• Good personal space
• Be aware of where you are walking
c. Challenges:
• See how far you can go in 15 seconds.

7. The Elephant Walk

a. Cues:
• Giant steps
• Swing trunks
• Twist stomach
b. Safety:
• Good personal space
c. Challenges:
• See how fast you can swing your trunk and walk.
• See how loud you can stomp your feet.
• See how big you can make your giant steps

Teaching Suggestions:
