Description of Idea Students will be in groups of three and given one scarf per group. Groups will be scattered throughout the room and two students will line up on one side (one in front of the other), facing the third student. There will be two steps separating the students. The side with two students will start with the scarf. Student #1 will throw the scarf up into the air to student #3. Once they do this student #1 will go across to stand behind player #3, passing each other on the right. Student #3 will catch the scarf and throw it up into the air to student #2. (S)he will move to her/his right and line up behind student #2. Students follow their throw and always go to the end of the line. Once they have this down, they can work as a group to spell out words. As they are throwing they can spell out a word, letter by letter.
Assessment Ideas: At the end of the lesson, the instructor may quiz the students on spelling words to see if they are spelling the words correctly.
Teaching Suggestions: If scarves aren't available, use plastic grocery bags or balloons.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities: Assign a buddy to assist the student with a disability to integrate into this lesson. If needed, assign the student with the disability to a group of 4-5 so the pace will be slower and the student will have greater success.
