Name of Activity: Poly Spot Driving

Purpose of Activity: The students will follow directions and move safely through space.

Prerequisites: Locomotor movements, being familiar with a stop light

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: Poly spots, music, music player,(to hear speed requested) one of each; red, yellow and green cones (or other object to give a visual of speed requested) *Red cone = no music = no movement *Yellow cone = soft music = caution, careful movement *Green cone = louder music = fast movement with control

Description of Idea

Review with the students that drivers cannot bump another vehicle or object when they are moving. If they do, a police officer will come and visit with them or give them a ticket. Review the stop light signals as well: Red = Stop (no music), Yellow = Caution (soft music), Green = Go (louder music). Clarify that green means students only go as fast as they can with control.

The teacher is the police officer. If students bump someone or something, the police officer will pull them to the side and visit with the student about safety and keep them out of the activity for a few moments. No one wants to be pulled over!

Hand out one poly spot to each student. Explain that this is their steering wheel. Ask the students, "What do we need to do before we move the vehicle?" BUCKLE UP for SAFETY! The teacher calls out the movement, (tippie toe walk), places a cone for the students to view, (green), and adjusts the music, (loud). After 20-30 seconds the teacher changes the music level and the cone and calls out a new movement. Variations may be added to include a quick red cone, no music to signal a quick freeze (a deer in the road). Backing is always fun for the students (yellow cone and soft music to indicate caution).

Teaching Suggestions:

When performing the back up portion make sure the kids are walking slow!
