Name of Activity: Indy 500

Purpose of Activity: To practice the skill of hand dribbling by involving speed, levels, and changes of direction.

Prerequisites: Students should have knowledge of hand dribbling and should have practiced for a few classes before introducing this game.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: 1 basketball for every student, open space.

Description of Idea

Each student lines up across the sideline of the basketball court. Each student has a basketball. Every student should be equidistant from the next so there is enough space. The teacher begins by saying "start your engines." The students begin to dribble in place. While students are dribbling in place, the teacher says "rev your engines." The students attempt to dribble the ball as fast as possible without losing control (in place).

Finally when "1st gear" is yelled, the students can begin to travel around the court at a very slow pace. At "2nd gear" they will travel at a walking pace, "3rd gear" at a jog and "4th gear" at a run. When the word "Crash" is called out, the students must switch hands (usually a crossover) to avoid the crash. Alternate between the 4 gears. At "Road Block" the student will turn, switch hands, and begin to go the opposite direction.

Once completed, return to the task and incorporate levels and directions.
