Name of Activity: Underhand Striking with a Paddle or Racket

Purpose of Activity: The assessment is used to evaulate the student's cognitive understanding of striking a ball underhand with a paddle or racket.

Suggested Grade Level: 4-5

Description of Idea

The asssessment is a five-question multiple choice assessment. The assessment evaluates the student's understanding and recognition of cues, striking pattern and paddle position.

1. Circle the cues for underhand striking

Step with opposite foot
Step with same foot
Flat paddle
Eye on ball
Eye on target

2. Circle the cues for forehand striking

Step with opposite foot
Face target
Side to target
Scratch opposite shoulder
Scratch same shoulder


3. Circle the correct answer
The underhand striking pattern looks like:

A. Your back is to the target and you swing back and forth over your head

B. Face your target, feet shoulder width apart, paddle flat, eye on ball, step with opposite foot as you strike the ball and finish with paddle at eye level

C. Your feet are side by side, side to target, and paddle in your opposite hand

4. Circle the correct answer
The forehand striking pattern looks like:

A. Side to target, paddle in back hand start low and end high scratching opposite shoulder

B. Face your target, feet shoulder width apart, swing across body

C. Your back is to the target and you swing back and forth over your head


5. Circle the correct answer
Use the ready position in paddle sports to

A. Be ready for a time-out
B. Be ready to talk to your partner
C. Be ready to hit the ball
D. Be ready to help clean up after class
