Suggested Grade Level: 2nd-5th Materials Needed: 5-6 bicycle tubes and the same number of hand operated bicycle pumps, needles for each pump, individual jump ropes of different lengths, Cassette/CD player, Twist and Shout song by Chubby Checker Description of Idea Assign students to one of three stations before you begin the activity. Station One consists of children using their upper body to pump up an empty bicycle tube. Once it is filled or the time limit expires they are to let the air out of the tube and move to the next station. Station Two has students jumping rope. Encourage them to do tricks if they want and they can jump with a partner. Station Three is set up for students to dance to the song "twist and shout." This will be their aerobic activity station. When the teacher begins the music, children begin the activity at their station. The teacher stops the music approximatley every 30-45 seconds which is the signal for chidren to move to a different station. Continue this activity for 3-5 minutes allowing each child to participate at each station at least once. Teaching Suggestions: You may have the children move in a clockwise sequence from station to station if they have trouble having the opportunity to participate in each of the three stations. |
