Name of Activity: Positive Comment Walk-A-Long

Suggested Grade Level: 2-5

Materials Needed: Cones for boundaries.

Description of Idea

Have students find a partner very quickly. (If uneven number in class then have one group of three). Their task is to take a walk (or jog, skip, etc.) anywhere in the gym within the boundaries with that partner. During that time they are to each tell their partner something nice they had done or seen during the day or the week. When they hear the drum (or other signal) they are to quickly find another partner and do the same thing. Encourage them to think of something different for their new partner. They need to continue moving the entire time.

Do this for about 5 minutes. Have them meet with you in a group. Write down 2-4 of the nice things that they did on a board so you can later post.

Variations:

Have them jog or do a locomotor movement while they do this.

Play music (not very loud)

Have them share 2 or three things

Instead of positive comments have them tell what physical activities they did for the week

Teaching Suggestions:

Don't let them just walk with their best friends. They have to find a partner quickly.

Define what "nice" means. It could be a good deed, good manners by a friend, showing respect to a teacher, etc. It can be by anyone, e.g., friends, parents, teachers, and if you want a character on a TV show that they saw that did something nice.

Tell them you are going to play this every now and then so keep tabs on the positive things they do and see.
