Name of Activity: Fitness 500

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Cones, hula hoops, jump ropes, scooters, balls (playground)

Description of Idea

Mark off an area with cones that the students will move around. On the inside of the moving area assign a hula hoop for each student. Inside of each hoop put a ball, a jump rope, and a scooter (make sure students know how to use and carry these safely). This home hoop is where the students go everytime they change their equipment.

The students will first run (or whatever locomotor movement you indicate) for 2 minutes and then walk for 30 seconds. This is done around the cones you have set up. The students will go to their home hoop and get the ball and dribble it with their feet (or hands, your choice) keeping control as they go around the cone area for 2 minutes. The students then return their equipment to their hoop and run for 2 minutes and walk for 30 seconds. Go to the hoop and get the jump rope and do this for 2 minutes. Return the jump rope and run for 2 minutes and walk for 30 seconds. Go to the hoop and use the scooter around the cones for 2 minutes. Return the scooter and run for 2 minutes and walk for 30 seconds. The students will get the ball and dribble it using their hands around the cone area for 2 minutes.

Variations:

Have students use other locomotor movements other than running.

Use different equipment and skills of your choice.

Change the length of time for each skill.

Assessment Ideas:

Have the students take their pulse to see if they are in their target heart zone.

Visually observe if the students were doing the skills of the different activities as they were taught in previous lessons.

Ask the students what they felt the purpose of Fitness 500 was and which activity they felt that they got the most benefit from.
