Name of Activity: Try This

Purpose of Activity: Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their own creative balance to the class and have the rest of the students try it.

Prerequisites: Students should know your qualification(s) for balancing. For example: students must hold a still position for 3 seconds for it to be considered a balance.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: A gym mat for each student is ideal. If not, just make sure the students spread out for safety.

Description of Idea

After the students have had a few minutes to warm up and practice their unique balances, pick a few students to demonstrate their favorite balance. After the 3 second demonstration, the rest of the class attempts to replicate any balance done by any student in the group that just demonstrated. Repeat until all students have had a chance to show their balance.

Teaching Suggestions:

I allow students to "pass" if they don't want to demonstrate in front of the class. Tell all of the students that the important thing is to try to make it look like the demonstration. Everyone has different abilities. Do it to the best of your ability. It is also helpful to discuss the safety issues involved with attempting balances that are too difficult (handstand, headstand, etc.).
