Name of Activity: Musical Shapes In Personal Space

Purpose of Activity: To demonstrate an understanding of moving safely in general space and cooperatively working together.

Activity cues:

Moving Safe in General Space

1. Keep your eyes up.
2. Slow down or speed up to avoid “crashing”

Prerequisites:

1. Students should have practiced and be familiar with “cues” for moving safely general space.
2. Students should have practice performing locomotor skills.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: CD player and CD of lively music.

Description of Idea

Review moving safely in general space “cues”.

Discuss with students the importance of working together as a group for a common goal.

Ask students to find a good personal space. When the music is turned on, the students begin to perform a locomotor skill throughout general space (best not to choose running):

• Skip
• Jump
• Hop
• Gallop
• Leap
• Slide
• Jog

When the music stops, the teacher calls out a shape:

• Wide
• Opposite of wide
• Big
• Opposite of big
• Crooked
• Opposite of crooked
• Upper case A
• Lower case i
• Number 4
• Number 8

A group of two must get together (use a 10 second count down) and make the shape that the teacher calls out. Emphasize that both students have to be a part of the shape.

After the shapes have been completed, the teacher signals to the students to again find a personal space. When the music is turned on, the students begin to perform a different locomotor skill throughout general space until the music stops. A different group of two get together and make a different shape that the teacher calls out.

Assessment Ideas:

Use a checklist of the locomotor skills to indicate who needs help in what area.
