Name of Activity: Turkey Hunting

Purpose of Activity: The purpose of the activity is to practice the student's throwing and aiming skills while enjoying the Thanksgiving season.

Prerequisites: Prior knowledge of throwing form and skills.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: 72 flo-cone markers, 20 cones, yarn balls or bean bags

Description of Idea

Set-up: Mark off a designated playing space with ten cones on each side of the space. Place the flo-cone markers in the middle, scattered arrangement. Have a point value placed on each cone, either with different colors representing different points or numbers taped to the cones. Have the students line up behind the ten cones on each side, 2 or 3 at each line, depending on class size.

Instructions: Tell the students that the flo-cones represent turkeys and the yarn balls represent "turkey food." They are going on a "Turkey Hunt" and need to collect as many turkeys as they can, using the "food items" as bait. Each color of the cones is worth a different amount of points. On the signal, students will roll or throw the yarn balls and try to knock down the flo-cones. On a miss, the student will pick up the ball and come back to the end of the line to try again. If the cone is hit or knocked down, the student picks up that cone and stacks it on the cone at the beginning of their line.

For a math connection, each group can add up the number of points gained from the "Turkey Hunt" by adding up the point value of the cones.

Variations:

To incorporate nutrition information, categorize the balls or bean bags as certain items from the food groups. Talk about having a balanced meal for Thanksgiving, including all the nutrients a body needs each day.

Assessment Ideas:

Ask the kids when you should use an overhand throw and an underhand toss. Use a checklist to assess proper form while tossing or throwing.
