Name of Activity: Fitness Stations

Purpose of Activity: To determine the relationship between components of fitness and heart rate.

Suggested Grade Level: 4-5

Materials Needed: Assessment form and pencil for each student, heart rate monitor for one student in each group (preferably), station signs, three jump ropes, three playground balls on a deck ring (to hold the ball in place), eight cones, three 6” step boxes, three FITNESSGRAM curl-up strips, three scooters, six additional cones, three small towels

Description of Idea

Addresses National Standard #2 and #4

The students will perform this activity in one class period.

The students will be assigned to a group of 2-3 students with, preferably, one student in each group wearing a heart rate monitor. When the teacher strikes the drum one time, the students begin activity at one of ten fitness stations. When the teacher strikes the drum three times (45 seconds later), the student stops and reads the heart rate recording or takes a six-second pulse as directed by the teacher, records the heart rate on the appropriate line on the form, cleans up the station, and rotates to the next station. After participating at all the stations, the student completes the assessment form.

Station #1: jump rope

Station #2: push-ups over a playground ball

Station #3: jumping jacks

Station #4: wall squats

Station #5: slide around cones

Station #6: small forward and backward arm circles

Station #7: stepping up and down on the step boxes

Station #8: curl-ups with FITNESSGRAM curl-up strip

Station #9: sit on a scooter and move from one cone to another

Station #10: towel push-ups (While in the full push-up position, the feet are resting on a small towel. While in activity, the feet and legs move forward and backwards while sliding on the towel.)

Assessment Handout

Assessment Ideas:

This is a self- assessment to provide input to the student and can be included in the student working portfolio. To grade the cognitive domain, the teacher could create an analytic rubric with points going towards the knowledge portion of the nine-week grade.
