Purpose of Activity: To enhance students aerobic capacity through a rollerblading activity. Prerequisites: Students will need prior teaching and experience with rollerblading. This is an advanced activity probably best suited for advanced PE classes. It is probably a good idea to invite students who don't feel comfortable with rollerblading the opportunity to go to another portion of the gym to practice just rollerblading. Suggested Grade Level: 10-12 Materials Needed: Each student needs a small scarf (a juggling scarf works well), a pair of rollerblades, and mandatory rollerblad safety equipment (helmet, wrist and knee pads), and a large gym space Description of Idea After students have each put their rollerblades and safety equipment on, have them gather around the teacher for an explanation of this activity. They are only allowed to participate if they have the proper safety equipment on. Have each student place the scarf in a back pocket or tucked into the back of their sweats or shorts. Make sure they are not tucked in to far as then it will be to hard to "steal." The students then begin to rollerblade around the gym and try to take the scarf ("tag") of another student. When a student takes a scarf they are to leave it on the floor very near to where they took it. The "tagged" student must stand by their scarf until they "tag" another student that skates by them. They can then pick up the scarf, tuck it back in, and begin to "tag" other students. Variations: Invite students who aren't as comfortable to work on their rollerblading skills in another designated part of the gym (for instance half of the gym is for this activity and the other half is for practicing). After being tagged go to a practice area to perform certain skating skills before returning to the game. Have the students count how many scarves they collect? Play by teams using two different colored scarfs. Teaching Suggestions: Do not allow students to dive to make steals of the scarves. They must stay on their feet. Make sure the scarves are not too big because they may become hazardous obstacles on the floor for the rollerblades. Use back to the wall strategy during this activity so you can see the possible safety problems before they occur. |
