Name of Activity: Paper Airplane Throw

Purpose of Activity: To have students practice their throwing overhand skill with an emphasis on the cue of "stepping with the opposite foot."

Activity cues: Step with the opposite foot

Prerequisites: Previous lessons where the teacher focuses on stepping with the opposite foot is always helpful.

Suggested Grade Level: 1-2

Materials Needed: Paper airplanes pre-made, open activity area.

Description of Idea

Explain to the students that they are going to practice their throwing skills and that you are going to be looking to see if they step with their opposite foot. Have the pre-made paper airplanes already made and spread out on the side of the activity area. Have the kids get an airplane and go find a good self space. On your signal the students are to throw the paper airplane toward the ceiling. After they throw they need to wait until the airplane lands and then they can WALK and retrieve the airplane where they can throw again.

While they are throwing the airplanes make sure you are giving feedback about stepping with the opposite foot (or if you prefer, choose another throwing cue).

Variations:

Make airplanes using colored paper.

Use as an instant activity.

Teaching Suggestions:

You can find directions for making paper airplanes by doing a search for this on Google.

I used this activity for the 100th day of school. Our K - 2 students do tons of activities to celebrate this day. I had the students write their name on their airplane before we got started. I also told them that the length of our gym was 100 feet, and I had markers out (cones) to mark by 10's. We then took turns throwing our airplanes to see who could throw the longest and so on. I also set out hula hoops for targets. I used cues and watched to make sure they were stepping correctly. I also asked questions about form - "Do you think your airplane would stay in the air longer if you didn't step with your opposite foot?"

They had a blast. Besides, they never get to throw paper airplanes in school!
