Name of Activity:
Purpose of Activity:The purpose of this activity is to practice aiming with the underhand hit. This motion will be used in striking with short-handled implements and is a lead up for a underhand hit in volleyball.
Suggested Grade Level:1-2
Materials Needed:tape, hula hoops, several balls for serving (beach balls, large foam balls, trainer volleyballs)
Description of Idea
Tape square boxes on the wall at various heights. Tape "x" spots on the floor different distances from the wall: some close and some challenging. Place several hula hoops behind the starting line with various types of balls inside. Students are put into pairs. One student waits at the line. The other student goes to the "x" spot of their choice, near or far from the wall and serves.
Remind students the foot on the spot is on the same side you hold the ball. Point the hand holding the ball towards the taped box on the wall. One underhand hit is made towards the box. Students retrieve their own ball and then return to the line. Partner is then free to take her/his turn.
Students can select a different ball in the hula hoop behind the starting line.
Cue words can be said for the hit. The students can also be asked to show where on the ball they should hit it when the ball needs to go up in the air.
To maximize time on task, the teacher can have the students standing at the start line perform aerobic activities (i.e., jogging in place, jumping jacks) while waiting. That way there's also a fitness component!
