Name of Activity: Hot Potato Tag

Purpose of Activity: To have students work on their throwing and catching skills.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Balls that you can dribble and throw and catch (i.e., playground balls or appropriate sized basketballs), music

Description of Idea

Have students pair up and get about 5-8 giant steps (depending on throwing and catching ability and space this number can increase or decrease) from one another. When the music starts have the students throw and catch the ball you have provided them.

When the music stops, the person with the ball runs (or walks, grapevines, hops, etc.) carrying the ball and the other chases. If tagged before the music starts again, the student carrying the ball dribbles the ball 3 times, and then he/she becomes the tagger and chases his partner.

When the music starts again, the two go back to throwing and catching as they did before (they are in a different part of the playing area though).

We were outside and didn't have music, so I did one blow of the whistle to start throwing and two whistles to chase. This went fairly well. I found that 5 - 8 steps was too far and with 3rd graders got out of control. Therefore, I had them stand closer together and only do chest passes. To keep them from going nuts, I also added for them to keep track of how many times they could pass the ball without dropping it. This brought them into control and the challenge of getting the highest number of passes had them concentrating on passing and catching well.
