Name of Activity: Santa's Sack

Purpose of Activity: To practice throwing and catching with a partner or self toss-catch.

Prerequisites: Students should understand safe spaces and have some knowledge of throwing and catching skills.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: four large red sacks, bean bags, foam balls of all types, foam shapes and rings, yarn balls, small stuffed animals, wiffle balls, sponges, CD player, seasonal music

Description of Idea

Set up: Place the four sacks containing the items to toss in each corner of the gym. Divide the students into four groups, with each group starting at one of the sacks. Set up the CD player with seasonal music playing.

Directions: Explain to students that Santa's sacks are full of "toys" to toss and catch. They will go to the assigned sack, pull out a "toy" and start by self-tossing and catching. Tell them to find a safe space in which to practice tossing and catching. After a few minutes, have them partner up with someone in the same group and toss to each other, taking turns with each "toy." The teacher will signal to move to the next sack by pausing the music and saying "Ho, ho, ho!" Students return their "toys" to Santa's sack and move to the next. Repeat until the students have moved all the way around to each of the four sacks.

Assessment Ideas:

"Santa" will walk around the play area with a checklist to observe and record the level of skill in the underhand toss and the catch. Give the students feedback, both corrective and positive.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

"Santa" may deliver "toys" as necessary. Some students may need a catching partner instead of self-tossing.

I did a variation of this by dividing the gym into seven stations with cones/markers. Before the students entered the gym, I tell them they are coming into Santa's Workshop and to sit on the baseline of the basketball court. In each area there is a sack with toys inside. I tell the students that the elves have been working hard and have Santa's sacks all ready for delivery. However, Santa wants to make sure the toys are kid tested and safe and that is there job. I then assign 2-3 students to go to a station and sit by the sack. Once all are assigned I tell them they can start playing when the music plays (I have a playlist on my iPod of Christmas music.)When the music stops they put the toys back into the sack, sit down and point to the next sack they are going to. When all the kids are pointing correctly the students rotate to the next station.

Some of the things I used were scooters, velcro catch paddle and ball, basketballs near the basket, Katch A Kup, etc. Use whatever you have in your inventory.

The kids LOVED doing this because they got to play with so many things. It was great to see them play safely and cooperatively with one another. Many of the students were sweating when done with all the stations. I used with students in K-5.
