Name of Activity: Poison Hoop

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Hula hoops of at least 3 different colors, 1 hoop per student.

Description of Idea

In general space lay hula hoops out on floor so each student has one. When students arrive have each student stand inside a hoop. On the signal to begin, players shuffle their feet and gently tap the hoop to move around the playing area. Players should keep both feet inside the hoop at all times.

Designate players with a particular color hoop (e.g. red) as "poison". Poison hoop players shuffle their hoop and chase other players attempting to touch their poison hoop to as many other hoops as possible. A player touched by a "poison hoop" becomes "ill" and must sit down inside their hoop.

Designate players with a second color hoop (e.g. yellow) as medicine. Yellow medicine hoop players look for "ill" (sitting down) players. Yellow medicine players shuffle their hoops to those students, touch the hoop of the poisoned player, giving that player new life and allowing them to stand up and rejoin the game.

Assessment Ideas:

Younger children can brainstorm. What makes you successful when chasing players to poison them? How do you stay away from poison so you don't get sick? Have the children verbalize their responses, then write them on poster paper. Use these strategies when you play this game or transfer these strategies to other games played later.

Students may draw a picture depicting how they pursue another player or how they avoid another player when chased.
