Name of Activity: Jingle Bell Bounce

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: A basketball for each student (or any other available equipment that is appropriate to size and grade level), "Jingle Bells" music, and a cd player.

Description of Idea

Arrange the class into a free space position with one basketball for each student. After teaching the dribbling techniques and practicing levels, the students will attempt to dribble the basketball in a predetermined sequence.

The sequence is as follows:
3 quick dribbles,
3 more quick dribbles,
5 faster dribbles,
7 quick dribbles,
4 more dribbles,
1 slow dribble followed by a catch.
Repeat above.

This should emulate the Jingle Bells song. After the sequence is learned, add music to assist in the maintenance of the tempo and rhythm.

Variations:

To increase the skills, have the students attempt to duplicate the sequence while sitting, on the knees, lying on the side and reclining.

Assessment Ideas:

Check for proper form while dribbling: eyes ahead, finger pads, hip height, and ball to the side.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Change the size and surface of the ball for easier manipulation. Use an aide or another student to help with the sequence.

Love it! The kids love it too and its lots of fun. First they were looking at me like I was crazy...then it was contagious. After Jingle Bells, it was an icebreaker for all kinds of "Bouncing Songs." We even play, "Name That Tune" which can be hilarious and lots of fun.
