Name of Activity: Thumbs Up Rope Turning

Purpose of Activity: To help strenthen the non-dominant hand in double dutch rope turning.

Suggested Grade Level: 3rd and UP

Materials Needed: 2 14'-16' jump ropes, tape to mark an "X" on the floor

Description of Idea

Two students hold a pair of double dutch jump ropes stretched tightly between them. The students then start turning the jump ropes by making small circles with both hands (left hand clockwise, right hand counter clockwise) Have the students move closer together until the ropes are scraping the floor. As the students do this, have them put both of their thumbs up as they were giving the "thumbs up" sign to a friend. Now have them touch their chin with each passing turn of the rope. Keep practicing this until they can turn the rope consistently with small circles of both of their hands.

This activity will help the turner remember to make each hand pass by their chin and across their chest, which is usually a weakness in beginner turners, especially with the less-dominant hand. This skill will become automatic with practice and jumpers will then become successful. Remember (and continually remind your students), without good turners, there can not be good jumpers!

I was wondering if there are any sepcific cues that can be used to create a successful lesson in teaching double dutch over all? (Cues to start the jumpers, cues when to exit, cues when to jump, etc)
