Name of Activity: Jumping Explorations

Purpose of Activity: This is a wonderful lesson that focuses on jumping, but applies the concepts of force, levels and pathways.

Prerequisites: * Instruct students on using the arms for strong take-offs and absorbing with the legs on landing. * Students should have a general knowlege of space and specific knowledege of pathways and levels. * Students should have knowledge of effort and base of support.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: cones and floor tape to make pathways, music

Description of Idea

Set up ten (or more, depending on gym and class size) jumping stations around the gym.

Suggested stations:
1. Jump around the circle.
2. Jump on the zigzag line, landing on one foot.
3. Follow the curved line using a wide shape.
4. Jump along the broken line slowly.
5. Jump around the triangle, going fast
6. Jump inside the circle at a low level.
7. Jump on the straight line crossing and uncrossing the feet.
8. Jump along the pathway being very quiet/loud.
9. Make your own pathway and jump with your feet close together.
10. Jump on the zig-zag line at a high level.

Have the students work with a partner to follow the pathway - jumping in the different suggested ways. Use music to rotate from station to station.

Variations:

This set-up may be used for a variety of locomotor skills. Jumping for a very long time can be tiring so one may want to alternate the jumping stations with other locomotor skill stations.

Assessment Ideas:

Use a teacher checklist to assess individual students on the correct jumping pattern, take-off and landing.

Other concepts, such as levels, pathways, directions, and speeds can be introduced and assessed during this lesson.

Discuss favorite stations and levels of difficulty. Disuss the use of arms while jumping. Have students brainstorm other ways to jump in different pathways.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

This activity can be done by most students but allow students with special needs more time and space.
