Name of Activity:
Make It True
Purpose of Activity:To examine the deceptive ads for tobacco products.
Suggested Grade Level:6-8
Materials Needed:Tobacco ads from magazines, paper, glue, scissors, and markers.
Description of Idea
Student chooses an ad and draws his/her own version of the ad, using facts about the dangers of smoking. The student may parody the ad, for example, instead of a model smiling with sparkling white teth she may be drawn with yello-stained teeth. Glue the student-drawn page and the actual ad side by side on a big sheet of paper.
Did the student used valid facts about tobacco?
Is the drawing and text visually effective?
Is the message the student is trying to convey clear?
Teacher may have to supply some ads for those students not having access to magazines
Expand to include alcohol and/or other drugs.
Think about having them displayed one day similar to a poster presentation at a conference. Students could move from ad to ad, have an explanation as to why the picture was changed as it was and then the class could rate the ads for most effective changes.
Hang them in the hall! Other students love to read them!
