Name of Activity: First Day Protocol

Purpose of Activity: To introduce new classes to the rules and protocols of their P.E. class using your school's technology.

Prerequisites: none

Suggested Grade Level: All

Materials Needed: Lap top computer, projector and digital camera.

Description of Idea

Tired of the old "go over the rules" the first day presentation. This isn't a new concept, but it was made fun by taking dozens of pictures throughout the past year of the kids participating in all of our activities, along with cartoons, clipart, catchy graphics, "jock jams" music accompaniment, kids modeling correct clothing, and every other topic that would normally be discussed the first day. The kids returning from last year loved looking for themselves or friend's pictures, and the incoming sixth graders who have never had P.E. had a chance to SEE how much fun class is and help relieve any anxiety they may have. I follow this up for any time left that day with one of the "getting-to-know-you" ideas in the P.E. Central lessons.

Assessment Ideas:

A rules quiz I give about two weeks into the term to review. (They also still have a disclosure paper which is sent home and must be returned signed by a parent.)

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Include them in the pictures!
