Prerequisites: A knowlege on how to maneuver through general space. The ability to safely tag another student. Suggested Grade Level: 1-3 Materials Needed: One or two soft nerf or gator balls (Depending on class size), small sheets of blank paper, basket, marker pen Description of Idea Before beginning the activity, the teacher must write down the names of characters on Spongebob Squarepants on separate sheets of paper. Some suggestions for names are: Spongebob Squarepants Each of these names (there are 17 of them) will be written on a piece of paper, folded up and placed into a basket. If there are more than seventeen students in the class, names can be repeated. Each student will pick a piece of paper out of the basket. Teachers will tell the students to remember who their character is for it is very important in the game. After every student has a character, the teacher will call out the name of character that will be "it". The student(s) that are "it" will move through general space attempting to tag the other students. If a student is tagged, they must freeze and shout out the words, "I'm Ready, I'm Ready" (Spongebob is known for saying this). The only way to get untagged is by receiving the "Krabby Patty". Prior to starting the game, the teacher gives one student, who is not it, the nerf ball which is called the Krabby Patty. The student with the Krabby Patty is responsible for helping their teammates who are tagged by handing them the Krabby Patty. Once a student has the Krabby Patty in their hands, they are unfrozen and must go help another student in need by handing them the Krabby Patty. The process with continue throughout the activity. On some predetermined teacher command, the students will freeze and wait to see who the next Spongebob character will become "it". Variations: Vary locomotor skills that the students use while moving in general space. Assessment Ideas: The teacher can move about the playing area and check to see if the students are displaying proper affective behavior by helping those students who need the "Krabby Patty". The teacher can also observe if students are able to move through general space while keeping their eyes forward and focusing on the obstacles around them. |
